Clinozoisite (Ca₂Al₃(SiO₄)(Si₂O₇)O(OH)) is the monoclinic counterpart of orthorhombic zoisite — same chemistry, different crystal system. It is closely related to epidote but has lower iron content.

Clinozoisite (Ca₂Al₃(SiO₄)(Si₂O₇)O(OH)) is the monoclinic counterpart of orthorhombic zoisite — same chemistry, different crystal system. It is closely related to epidote but has lower iron content. Clinozoisite forms in low-grade metamorphic rocks and contact-aureole skarns. Italian Alps and Japan yield gem-quality material.

About Clinozoisite

Clinozoisite belongs to the silicate class in the epidote group and has the chemical formula Ca2Al3(Si2O7)(SiO4)O(OH). It crystallizes in the monoclinic system and holds a steady position among silicate species.

Identification & care

Crystals commonly develop as prismatic, striated along length, tabular, massive. Its color range is broad, including colorless, pale yellow, pale green, and pale pink (thulite = mn-bearing — see id 432). The luster is vitreous, the streak is white, and specimens range from transparent to translucent. The cleavage is perfect {001}. The fracture is uneven to conchoidal, which aids identification.

Collector context

Collector notes

Clinozoisite holds a steady place in systematic mineral collections. Clinozoisite is widely represented across Chinese provinces, including Heilongjiang, Gansu, Anhui, Guizhou.
