About this specimen
In this chalcopyrite specimen from Shangbao, Hunan, several dark brassy crystals with broad square-looking faces project above a pale, finely crystalline base. One larger crystal rises behind a smaller front block, and their faces alternate between near-black shadow and bright metallic reflection. Small pale growths cling to some edges.
The matrix forms a low, uneven platform around the group. Straight edges and the stepped arrangement of the larger crystals provide the main geometric interest. Broad metallic faces meet at sharply defined edges above a much finer pale crystalline surface.
Locality: Shangbao, Hunan, China. Weight: 55 g (1.94 oz). Dimensions: 5 × 3 × 3.2 cm (50 × 30 × 32 mm; 1.97 × 1.18 × 1.26 in).
